Spiritual and Interfaith Therapy in Chicago

At Charism Counseling Center, we support clients in the process of recognizing and exploring the context spirituality and faith play in the understanding of their individual lives, relationships and the world, as a whole. Spirituality and faith can serve as guiding principles for personal views and beliefs. Both religious and spiritual practices provide solace and connection—making them important topics to explore within a therapy setting.

We take an interfaith and interspiritual approach to supporting clients, recognizing the universality in our shared spiritual and religious experiences. All religious and spiritual traditions are honored, valued and respected.

Although we believe in the power of spirituality and faith and to positively impact and transform lives, we also understand they can be a source of confusion and wounding. We offer clients an opportunity to identify and process experiences of faith-based trauma and wounding.

Spiritual and Interfaith Therapy in Chicago FAQs

How does faith-based counseling differ from secular counseling?

Faith-based counseling differs from secular counseling in that it incorporates spiritual teachings from religious texts like the Bible, Qur’an, Torah or others. This form of counseling honors the client’s request to discuss their faith and use faith-based interventions as a component to support their mental health.

How is spirituality and faith incorporated into counseling?

Therapists can make use of the spiritual and religious beliefs of their clients to help them explore and resolve problems in their everyday lives. Integrating religious and spiritual themes into therapy may encompass a variety of interventions centered around a client’s religious beliefs and values, including participating in specific religious activities, as well as engaging in spiritual practices like meditation or prayer. What does it mean to be an interfaith therapy practice?

Interfaith refers to the process of bringing together people of diverse religious faith traditions usually for the purpose of fostering greater understanding and dialogue across practitioners of different religious backgrounds. As an interfaith therapy practice, Charism Counseling Center honors and respects the traditions, practices and beliefs of each of our clients.

What is religious abuse?

Religious abuse occurs when someone’s religious or spiritual beliefs are used as a tool to cause pain or harm. Like other forms of abuse, religious abuse happens when an individual associated with a religious community or the community, as a whole, exerts power and control over members of the community. Religious abuse can be physical, verbal, emotional, sexual or financial. Source: PsychCentral
