LGBTQ affirmative therapy is provided by a competent mental health provider, who respects and honors all queer identities. This form of therapy explores how heterosexism, homophobia and transphobia affect our personal development and sense of identity. LGBTQ affirmative therapy offers a safe space for clients to speak openly and honestly about their individual sexuality and gender identities within the context of their everyday lives and experiences. Do individuals who identify as queer disproportionately experience anxiety and depression?
Although research is still evolving in the study of the LGBTQ community, evidence from recent studies indicate that members of the queer community may be at higher risk for experiencing anxiety and depressive disorders. Like with other demographic groups, race and socioeconomic status can negatively affect the quality of care queer individuals receive or their ability to access care. Research indicates LGBTQ adults are more than twice as likely as heterosexual adults to experience a mental health condition. Transgender individuals are nearly four times as likely as cisgender individuals to experience a mental health condition. Members of the LGBTQ community may also face harassment or a lack of cultural competency from mental health care providers, which may exacerbate mental health conditions.
